Teresa Pitman, co-author of La Leche League’s The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding, shares this information, “The composition of your breast milk will change in response to the need of your baby – a higher water content in the hot weather and a higher fat content in the colder months.”
Tips to breastfeeding in the hot summer….for baby
-liquids other than breast milk are filling, they don’t have as much nutrients and may effect your breast milk supply. avoid water and stick with your milk.
-breast milk is supply and demand, feed baby frequently.
-Breast milk is designed to be thirst quenching and full of vitamins, fat and other goodness. Remember how thirsty you are in the heat, baby is too. Give him some thirst quenching foremilk.
Tips for breastfeeding in the hot summer…. for Mom
-Try and offer skin to skin. While this can me a sticky sweaty option it can increase your milk supply and offer more hydration for your little one. Oxytocin! (bonus if you can find AC!) If this is not possible have a thin receiving blanket between you and baby
-breastfeed side laying— this way baby isn’t sweat induced suction cupped to you.
Tips for supporting breastfeeding… for fathers and other family members
– Offer a cool drink for mom as she is breastfeeding
-offer encouragement. You know what it’s like when someone tries to snuggle up to you in the heat of summer, imagine this every few hours. Remind her of her awesomeness and dedication to the health of her baby.
Breast milk is perfect for summer. Wither you are going to the beach, playground or camping breast milk is always available. It’s super easy! It requires no preparation, no refrigeration, doesn’t spoil, and often comes in easy to access packaging, (think tank tops and maxi dresses)

Saturday march 22nd was my first baby show. I was prepared… I had brochures, business cards, placenta prints, boobie beanies and my sparkling personality.
This show taught me many things: It prepared me for the million questions, positive and negative about being a doula.
“What is a doula?”
“You charge how much?”
“You only charge how much?”
“What is a placenta?”
“Ewww, you do what with it?”
My RANT: “We are educated people that have a passion for birth and know the strength of a woman. We know that birth is normal and natural, we stay calm and collected. We engage moms in relaxation techniques both physically and in grounding exercises. We prepare dads and moms in prenatal visits and check in after the baby is born. We prepare placentas because we know the importance of postpartum health and we have learned and studied the sacred organ and are intrigued by it’s beauty. We do this all with being on call for sometimes a month at a time! We go to bed early, we sleep beside our phones, we say things like “I`ll be there if I’m not at a birth” … And in the big scheme of things we likely make less than $25 an hour, but we do it because we are PASSIONATE and we believe every woman deserves a doula.”
Ok, so I didn’t say all that, but I wanted to. I wanted to shout them, I wanted to have a big sh-peal about doulas while on the little stage after the handsome tap dancing boy and before the sleep consultant. But instead, I handed out cards, I answered each question with respect and evidence based information. I answered everything from my heart.
Here is hoping someone heard me and wants to book me for a birth. All I can be is me, and I’m happy with that.

The doula interview is an important step in hiring the right doula for your family. A doula is a trained and experienced professional who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to the mother before, during and just after birth. As a parent looking to hire someone to be there for emotional comfort You need to feel like you connect and this is hard in an hour.
Do your research– Read their website, follow them on facebook… do they blog? Read it. Do this all before you meet them… Educate yourself on what they do and get a feel for them online. Do they swear like a sailor? maybe you do too… Then it could be a good match, if not maybe you need find another doula.
Have a list of questions— “What is your training?” “How many births?” “How do you handle stress?” “When do you go on call?” “How would you work with me and my partner?” “Do you have a back up doula?” These are all pretty common ones I get often but I love the ones like “do you like garlic? because I cant handle garlic at all” “my husband can’t handle blood so so how will you keep him busy” Listen to the answers, are they genuine, are you connecting with them?
Don’t hold back– It may feel awkward to discuss intimate details about your feelings and plans for birth within minutes of meeting someone but to a doula it is natural. Open up, let loose and say what you really feel. because in birth, there is no holding back.
Reflect— What is helpful for you when you are stressed? What brings you back and grounds you? Does this doula sound like she has those skills? Do they match your needs?
Do you like them? Really, you need to like them. if you find them annoying how are you going to feel 24 hours in on the big day?
Choose your Doula– Sit down and have a frank discussion with your partner. lay it all out and see listen to each other. Both of you will have an active part in the birth, so you both need to feel comfortable.
